What to Look For in a Free Instagram Unfollow Tool

Search results for a free Instagram unfollow tool are extensions, websites, and code snippets, each calling the others unsafe. Some are unsafe. Some are fine and merely different. This page is a way to tell them apart without a fake ranking. We build Unfolks, so weigh that when you reach the section about it. The criteria come first, and they apply to us too.

We have not reviewed every extension. A high install count is not proof of safety. Where we describe another project, we stick to what we checked. Where we have not checked, we say so.

One limit sits on every option, including doing it yourself: no tool can guarantee Instagram will not restrict your account if you unfollow quickly. Instagram does not publish the exact follow or unfollow limits. The limits guide is the long version of that sentence.

The criteria that actually matter

Use this list on any tool, then keep reading for how the real options map onto it.

It does not ask for your password. You are already signed in. Don't type that password into a website to see who doesn't follow you back.

The lists stay on your computer. Comparing followers and following does not require uploading them. "We store it encrypted on our servers" is still a server you do not need.

You can see the names, exclude people, and stop. Be wary of a count with the names locked until you pay. We have not audited specific apps that do this, so this is a criterion, not a verdict. A useful tool lets you hide accounts, search, and filter. It waits between unfollows, rests after a short run, and lets you halt the batch. "As fast as possible" is the behavior that gets accounts limited.

It tells the truth. "Ban proof" is a marketing sentence. Prefer a tool that says Instagram can stop it. It also cannot show a perfect unfollow history without old snapshots, and it cannot remove your followers in bulk.

Option 1: check by hand

Open Following and see which accounts are marked as following you. Everyone else on that list does not follow you back. It costs nothing and it works on the phone. Past a small list you lose your place, because Instagram has no "only non-followers" view. For a short list it is still the right tool. The steps sit with the others in how to see who doesn't follow you back.

Option 2: Instagram's own download

"Download your information" is Instagram's export of your followers and following. You request it, wait for the file, and compare the lists on your computer. The comparison sends Instagram nothing, so it is the look that cannot be rate-limited. The file is a snapshot, it will not unfollow anyone, and it takes as long as Instagram takes to build it.

The steps, including not uploading the file to a random site, are in find non-followers with your data download. This option wins when you want the names and zero requests. It loses when you want to unfollow from the same screen today.

Option 3: a console script

A console script is code you paste into the browser's developer tools on instagram.com. It runs in your existing session, so a well-written one does not need your password. It also trains you to paste code into a console that Instagram itself warns you about. The warning exists because that paste is a common way to steal accounts. The warning is about the habit, not a claim that every script is malicious.

We compared one public script, Cobanov Instagram Unfollowers version 2.4.1, on October 21, 2026. Both tools are free, keep lists in the browser, wait between unfollows, can resume a scan Instagram stopped, and can check a data file without sending requests. The script's default waits were 4–4.8 seconds between unfollows and 5 minutes after every 5. Unfolks defaults to 4–6 seconds and 3 minutes after every 5. The script suits Firefox or Safari, where Unfolks does not run, if you read the code before you paste it. It may have changed since that date. Full notes are in the Unfolks vs Cobanov post and on the comparison page.

Option 4: a browser extension

An extension installs once, updates when the browser updates it, and can live in a side panel instead of covering the Instagram page. That is the shape of Unfolks. It is free, with no paid tier. It runs in Chrome, Edge, and Brave, because it needs a side-panel extension API. Opera can't open it. Firefox and Safari are not supported. On the Chrome Web Store the listing shows 20,000 users and a rating of 4.3 out of 5 from 69 ratings. Those are store figures, not a survey we ran.

Against the criteria:

  • It does not ask for your password. It uses the session already open on instagram.com. Lists stay on your computer. The data-file check is not uploaded or saved. A crash report can be sent if the extension errors, which the privacy policy explains. That report is not your follower list.
  • You can filter verified, not verified, private, and no profile photo, sort by when you followed them, search, and hide accounts so a bulk unfollow skips them.
  • The default pace is 4–6 seconds between unfollows and a 3 minute rest after every 5. Both are adjustable in Settings. You can stop a batch. If Instagram refuses, Unfolks stops and shows when to retry.
  • A limited scan resumes from where it stopped. Stopped scan progress is kept for up to 24 hours. A later refresh says how many accounts may have unfollowed you since the last scan. It does not invent a history from before the first one.
  • The data-file screen cannot unfollow. Looking at a file should not start a batch.

The source is public on GitHub. Public source is not a formal audit. It does mean you are not limited to a store description. We would not tell you to pick Unfolks on Firefox or Safari, or for a one-time look if you are willing to read a script. We would tell you to pick it on Chrome, Edge, or Brave when you expect to do this again.

What we will not claim

  • We will not rank tools we have not installed, and we will not call a store review a safety guarantee.
  • We will not quote an unfollow quota. Instagram has not published one.
  • We will not say your account cannot be restricted. It can, on any of these options, if the unfollows are too fast for whatever Instagram is enforcing that day.
  • We will not say Unfolks removes followers. It helps you unfollow accounts you follow. Those are different lists.

A simple way to choose

If the following list is short, use your eyes. If you want a copy and you can wait, request the download. If you are on Firefox or Safari, or you want nothing installed and you will read the code, look at the script we compared and judge it yourself. If you are on Chrome, Edge, or Brave and you want a panel you can open again next month, use the extension.

Whichever you pick, hide accounts you care about and unfollow slowly. Instagram notices the pace.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free Instagram unfollow tool?

There isn't a single best. Hand-checking is best for a small list. The official download is best when you want no requests. A console script is a reasonable fit for browsers an extension can't run in, if you trust the code. Unfolks is a fit for Chrome, Edge, and Brave when you want the list, filters, and a slow batch in a side panel. "Best" without saying for whom is advertising.

Are unfollow tools against Instagram's rules?

Using your account to unfollow people you follow is a normal action. Automating a large number of those actions can be limited. Instagram does not publish the line, and a tool cannot grant an exception to it. Avoid anything that asks you to hand over your password.

Is Unfolks really free?

Yes. There is no trial, no paid unlock, and no fee to see the usernames. The store rating, 4.3 out of 5 from 69 ratings, is separate from the price.

Can any of these show who unfollowed me last year?

Only if something kept last year's follower list. A new install cannot. See how to check who unfollowed you for what a snapshot can and cannot prove.
