Find Instagram Non-Followers With Your Data Download

There is a way to see who doesn't follow you back that never asks Instagram for the list while you read it. You ask Instagram, once, for a copy of your own data. You wait. You download a file. You compare followers and following on your computer. During that comparison, no tool has to page through instagram.com on your behalf, so the comparison itself is not something Instagram can rate-limit.

That file is the "Download your information" export. This guide is how to request the part you actually need, what to do with it, and where people get surprised. The comparison tool we mention is Unfolks, because the same extension that scans also has a data-file check. You do not need the extension to understand the file. You do need it, or a careful afternoon with the export, if you want the names pulled out for you.

The file will not unfollow anyone. If that is the next job, it is a different one, described in how to mass unfollow on Instagram safely.

What the download is, and what it is not

Instagram lets you export information it holds about your account. Followers and following are part of that export. The file is a snapshot of the moment Instagram builds it, not a live view. Someone who follows you after that moment will not be in it.

It arrives because you requested it while signed in. A trustworthy tool does not need you to upload it. If a site says it will email you the non-followers once you upload the export, you are handing over a copy of your social graph. Compare the file locally instead.

One file is also not a history of unfollows. Who used to follow you takes two files from different days, which is covered in how to check who unfollowed you.

Request it without memorizing a dead menu

Instagram moves these screens. A screenshot from last year will send you looking for a button that has been renamed. Ignore the screenshot. Follow the label.

  1. Sign in to Instagram on your phone or on instagram.com, whichever you already use.
  2. Open settings. Look for Download your information. On current layouts it often sits inside your information and permissions, sometimes a step below an Accounts Center. If you cannot see it, use the settings search and type "download".
  3. Choose a partial download if Instagram offers "some of your information" versus everything. You do not need your messages, search history, or ads file to answer this question.
  4. Select followers and following. Leave the rest unchecked unless you want it for yourself.
  5. Pick a format if you are asked. HTML is easier to read in a browser. JSON is what programs read. Either export holds the same facts. If you will drop the file into Unfolks, keep the file Instagram gives you instead of renaming pieces of the archive.
  6. Confirm the request. Instagram emails the account, or offers the file in the app, when it is ready. That can be minutes or many hours. Refreshing does not speed it up.
  7. Download it to the computer where you will read it. Leave the archive intact until then.

If the email never comes, check spam and request it again later. Nothing else can build that file.

Compare it on your computer

You want accounts that are in following and not in followers. Compare the two lists from the same export so they describe the same moment.

Read it yourself

If you chose HTML, open the followers and following pages and search within them. For a smaller account that is a complete check. JSON is for programs. You will not want to compare it by eye.

Drop it into Unfolks

Unfolks has a data-file check in the side panel, labeled alongside the normal scan. Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store if you want it. It runs in Chrome, Edge, and Brave. Open Instagram, open the panel, choose the data-file check, and drop the file in.

The comparison runs in the panel. The file is not uploaded and it is not saved. That is a stronger claim than "we take privacy seriously", so here is the plain version from our privacy policy: files from your Instagram data download are compared in the panel and are never uploaded or stored. The only thing the extension sends anywhere other than Instagram is a crash report if something breaks. The policy is at /privacy-policy.

The result is the same kind of list as a scan: accounts you follow that do not follow you back. You can review it there. You cannot unfollow from that screen. Instagram is not being asked to do anything, which is why there is nothing to tap. When you want to unfollow, open the profile yourself, or run a normal scan later and unfollow from the scanned list at a slow pace.

Why this is the no-risk look

A scan works by reading your account through the session you already have, page after page. That is allowed, and it can still be slowed down. Instagram limits heavy requesting, and it does not publish the exact point where a scan is "too much". If a scan stops, Unfolks keeps your place so you can resume. That is a good recovery. It is still a conversation with Instagram that the data file never starts.

Use the file when you only want the names, when a previous scan was limited, or when you want a copy a later export can be compared with. Use a scan when you want to unfollow from the list, with filters, hidden accounts, and a pace of 4–6 seconds between unfollows and a 3 minute rest after every 5, or when you do not want to wait for an export. A later refresh can say how many accounts may have unfollowed you since the last finished scan.

Neither path asks for your password. Both should keep the lists on your machine. A tool that needs your password to "process your download" wants a login, not the file.

What the file will not settle

A few honest limits, before you wait overnight for an export and feel cheated:

  • It will not include someone who followed you after Instagram generated it.
  • It will not explain why an account does not follow you. Private accounts, brands, and old friends look the same in a username list.
  • It will not show unfollows from before this file unless you kept an older file.
  • It will not mass-remove your followers. You cannot delete a follower in bulk through this file. Cleaning up is about who you follow. That distinction is easy to miss and it saves a lot of disappointment.
  • It will not protect a later unfollow. If you take the names and then drop them as fast as a script allows, the caution is gone. See the limits guide. No tool can guarantee that part will be restriction-free.

Keep a copy if you might want the diff

When the file arrives, copy it somewhere with the date in the folder name before you open it. Do the same next time. Two dated folders are an unfollow record you own. One folder, overwritten, is just today's list with extra steps. A weekly export is unnecessary.

Frequently asked questions

Is Download your information safe to use?

It is Instagram's own export, requested from your account. The risk is not the request. The risk is what you do with the file afterwards. Keep it on your computer, don't email it around, and don't upload it to a site you do not have a reason to trust.

How long does the file take?

Instagram does not promise a time. Some exports are ready quickly. Others take hours. Asking a third-party tool to fetch the same lists live is faster and is also the thing that can be rate-limited. Pick the wait on purpose.

Can Unfolks unfollow the accounts it finds in the file?

Not from the data-file screen. That screen only compares. Open a profile, or run a scan and unfollow from the scanned list. The scan is the path that talks to Instagram again.

Do I have to download my entire archive?

No. Request followers and following. The rest of your archive is unrelated to this question, and it is a much larger file with a lot of personal history you do not need to spread across your downloads folder.
